Diva or Delicately Comely?

By: Nastassia Newell
As the lights become dim and the runway edge lighting comes on, she can be seen walking down the catwalk in a swift predatory sway. She seemingly exudes confidence; her attire is from top designers and she is modeling their latest collections. Though fashion week endures only for the week, the outfits showcased on the catwalk will set the year’s trends for women worldwide. A common term used to describe her is ‘diva’. A diva is defined as a “self-important person who is temperamental and difficult to please”. A striking contrast to the woman described in 1 Timothy 2:9,” Paul is impressed by the Holy Spirit to admonish women and he says , “in like manner also, that woman adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety”. Paul further completes this verse by admonishing women as to what should be avoided, “not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array”. This woman may seem at surface glance to be timid, unexciting and plain, but, she is the striking opposite. In Proverbs 31: 10, the Bible says, “her price is far above rubies”. What makes her so valuable? Not her wealth, physical attractiveness, physique or musical abilities. It is her character, she is virtuous, she is converted.
“self-important person who is temperamental and difficult to please”

As a result of her character, “the heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil”, Proverbs 31:11. While Christ is calling women to a high and holy calling God also describes the body of believers as a woman. In Jeremiah 6:2 the Bible says, I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman”. God compares His people to a woman who is “comely” and “delicate”; attractive and exquisite. In 1 Peter 2:9, the bible says, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light”. The purpose of this woman, which is the church, is to show the character of God. How does one reveal Christ’s character?
this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another”, John 13:35.
One of the ways that Christ said would reveal whether we are truly His bride is by the way that we care for one another. A bible text that affirms this point is revealed in, 1 John 4:10,”If a man says, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? Are we patient, forgiving and forbearing with our brothers and sisters or are we temperamental, difficult to please and unforgiving. A pertinent, reflective question that one should honestly ask themselves is, ‘what kind of woman does my character reveal a diva or a woman who is delicate and comely?’ Only God truly understands our true condition and Christ has provided a divine prescription for that ‘diva- like’ condition. In Romans 12:2 the bible says, “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”. Transformation of our characters comes from what we constantly feed our minds.
God compares His people to a woman who is “comely” and “delicate”; attractive and exquisite.

It is a law both of the intellectual and the spiritual nature that by beholding we become changed. The mind gradually adapts itself to the subjects upon which it is allowed to dwell. It becomes assimilated to that which it is accustomed to love and reverence. As we make Christ our daily companion we shall feel that the powers of an unseen world are all around us; and by looking unto Jesus we shall become assimilated to His image. By beholding we become changed. The character is softened, refined, and ennobled for the heavenly kingdom. The very act of looking for evil in others develops evil in those who look. By dwelling upon the faults of others, we are changed into the same image. But by beholding Jesus, talking of His love and perfection of character, we become changed into His image.”
Pray unceasingly for a character like Christ, God’s promise to those whom are seeking to overcome their corrupt nature is John 6:37 “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
