8 Important Keys to Knowing God’s Will For Your Life

BY EDRISS PERJUSTE

As a young Christian man, one of the many things that I seem to particularly wrestle with is, knowing God’s will for my life. I even sometime question could it be that my existence here was just a mere coincidence or am I here for a special reason? In Jeremiah 1:5 the Bible says, before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” With that verse being so vividly clear, I know that my life is not a coincidence, I was well thought of and, I was ordained for a special mission to be a prophet unto the nations. However, there are still questions; how do I allow God’s will to manifest in my life? How do I make decisions that are according to God’s will? I have found in my experience and through research eight important keys for someone to know God’s will for their life. These steps are very simple but can be complicated if they are not carefully examined and followed properly.

Step #1: Walk with God

The Bible reads in Psalms 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” If it is your desire to follow God’s will, the very first thing you must do is walk with God. It is like having a best friend, how did that friendship become so close and now are considered best friends? It is because the two of you spoke daily getting to know each other, and because you have done so, you now know what your friend would and would not like, so therefore you can walk together. The same with Jesus Christ, you must talk to Him daily through prayer and, get to know Him by reading his Word daily so that you may walk with Him. There are special benefits in being God’s friend; it means you are no longer a slave/servant of the devil. In John 15:15 the Bible says, “Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

Step #2: Don’t Make Decisions Simply by Feelings

Never make permanent decisions on an emotional state. Feelings are temporary, but decisions are final and can affect your relationship with Jesus Christ. In Isaiah 1:18 the Bible says, come now, let us reason together, saith the Lord…” Also, 2 Timothy 1:7 states that For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” We must trust in the Lord and use wisdom, understanding, and knowledge gain through his Word to make wise decisions that are according to His will.

Step #3: Surrender Your Will to God’s

This is one of the more strenuous step; it is very scary to not be in control. In Romans 12:1-2 The bible reads, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.” Jesus Christ oversees every created thing, when you surrender your will to God’s, you are in good hands. Christ will see to it that you are better off, the bible says in Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Step #4: Consider Providential Circumstances

It is of crucial importance as a Christian in relation to life’s impediments that you have practical experiences with God; and that you remember them. These experiences are imperative in shaping up one’s faith; when you are facing life’s obstacles, trials and tough decisions, moments like these will propel you to have a reliance on God; as He is the only One that can see you through. You must remember always how God delivered you in similar situations in the past. In Deuteronomy 8:2 the Bible says, “And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.”

Step #5: Consult with Like-minded Company

As Christians awaiting the second coming of Christ we must surround ourselves with like-minded individuals with the same common goals, this is where the church we attend, the friends we associate ourselves with, and the influence that are in our lives comes into play; a friend that submits to Christ daily can be of a good council when we are facing life’s difficulties. The Bible speaks on this exact matter in several passages:

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.(Proverbs 11:14)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly.” (Psalm 1:1)

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.” (Proverbs 12:15)

There is nothing wrong in consulting a God-fearing friend for council about a weighty decision. We are brothers and sisters in Christ we must be able to council one another on important matter.

Step #6: Ask God in Prayer to Reveal His Will

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5) Take time to listen to the voice of God as well as asking for direction. Anything you ask of God, He will answer you. If you Ask God in prayer to reveal His will to you, He will. “If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:14)                                 Ye lust and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.” (James 4:2)

Step # 7: Make a Decision

After careful examination build on biblical knowledge, weight the evidence and commit to a decision grounded on scriptures. Diligently Applying the first previous six steps. Scripture pertaining to indecisiveness utter these profound words: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:8) Tell God your decision before telling anyone else and proceed.

Step # 8 Proceed with Your Decision

Ask God to enlighten you if you have not chosen according to His will. Apply what’s known as the “open and shut theory”. As this succeeding verse will essentially summarize, And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” (Revelation 3:7-8)

We live in a world today where everything is moving at a very fast pace with no one really stopping to think and questioning whether the world is moving towards the right direction. With lots of new technology coming into place and, man’s intelligence reaching new heights, the world is really not considering whether or not God is moving along with its plans. As Christians, we know there is massive work at hand for us to do; it is our duty to go out there to enlighten the world with truth and to let them know about Jesus Christ, our savior. Let us follow these steps when facing tough decision so that we are always align with God’s will for our lives.
